Tax office (Belastingdienst)

A letter from the Dutch tax office (Belastingdienst)?

The Belastingdienst writes about assessments (aanslag), payment reminders (aanmaning) and decisions on objections. Read the date and the deadline first: what is in your own letter always takes priority.

What to know

  • Assessment (aanslag)

It states how much tax you must pay or get back, with a final payment date. If you disagree, you can object (bezwaar).

  • Objection period: 6 weeks

Counted from the date of the assessment, decision or payment. If your letter says something different, follow your letter.

  • Cannot pay on time?

You can often pay in instalments: the standard arrangement runs for a maximum of 12 months, with at least € 20 per month. Do not wait for a reminder.

  • Date in the future?

The tax office sends letters earlier than the date printed on them. Count your deadline from the date on the letter.

Explain my letter

Take a photo of your letter. BriefKlaar tells you in your own language what it says, what to do and by when, and drafts a reply in Dutch.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to object?

6 weeks from the date of the assessment, decision or payment. If your letter says something different, follow your letter.

Do I have to pay while my objection is pending?

For the part you object to, you get a postponement of payment until a decision is made. Pay the rest on time. Collection interest may apply.

I missed the objection period. What now?

You can still ask for an ex officio reduction (ambtshalve vermindering) and explain why you think the assessment is too high.
