Fines (CJIB)
A letter from the CJIB about a fine?
The CJIB collects fines. The letter in the top right corner of the letter tells you which type of fine it is. Fake messages are common, so always check your letter on cjib.nl yourself.
What to know
Fine (letter M): 8 weeks
You have 8 weeks to pay, to make a payment arrangement or to add the fine to an arrangement you already have.
Reminder: 2 more weeks
If you have not paid after 8 weeks, a reminder follows. You then have 2 weeks to pay without extra costs.
Penalty order (letter O)
If you disagree you can file an objection (verzet), within 14 days of the moment you learn of the order. Paying means you accept the penalty.
Fake messages
According to the CJIB, an email, text or WhatsApp message about unpaid amounts is fake. Do not click links; go to cjib.nl yourself.
Explain my letter
Take a photo of your letter. BriefKlaar tells you in your own language what it says, what to do and by when, and drafts a reply in Dutch.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay if I appeal against a fine?
Not yet. If you have to pay after the decision of the public prosecutor, you get 8 weeks again.
Does the fine go up if I do not pay?
Yes. After the final payment date up to two summonses follow: the first is one and a half times the fine, the second three times.
Can I pay in instalments?
Often yes. You arrange a payment plan on the CJIB website, also after a reminder or summons.
